Cuba and Mexico secure tickets to U18 WCH in Argentina

 

Cuba and Mexico joined the list of qualified teams to the U18 Girls' World Championship in Argentina

HAVANA, Cuba, March 31, 2017 – Hosts Cuba and Mexico have booked the two NORCECA tickets to the U18 FIVB Girls’ World Championship at the age-group Pan American Cup while Chile and Colombia are still in competition for the South American spot to the world event scheduled in Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina from August 18 to 27.

Meanwhile two teams already qualified to the world championship –host Argentina and NORCECA champions Dominican Republic- advanced directly to the semifinals of the Pan American Cup as pool winners with best records.

In Thursday’s actions, Argentina won Pool A with cruising victory over Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-9) to edge Pool B winners Cuba for the semifinal spot with a 1.431 point-ratio to 1.410 of the home team. 

The Dominican Republic defeated Mexico 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-9) in a match between undefeated sides in Pool C.

In Friday’s quarterfinals, Cuba will play Chile while Mexico meets Colombia. In the qualification matches for the 7 to 10 positions, it will be Uruguay versus Costa Rica and Puerto Rico against Guatemala.

Martina Delucchi and Candela Salinas led the one-sided Argentina’s victory with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Solimar Cestero finished with 10 for Puerto Rico.

The Dominicans displayed terrific defense at the net with a tournament-high 15 blocks in the victory over Mexico. Mesalina Yosil led the high wall with seven blocks of her own.

Yaneiry Rodriguez was the winners’ main offensive weapon with 21 points while Madeline Guillen finished with 17 points, all in attacks. Liliannis Feliz added 14, including three blocks, in the victory. Mexico’s Uxue Amaya Guereca and Esther Castro finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively, in the loss.

In the other matches of Thursday, Uruguay came all the way back from a 0-2 deficit to edge Guatemala 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-16, 15-6) in a match between winless teams in Pool C and Colombia swept Costa Rica 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) to finish Pool A with a 1-1 win-loss record.

Sofia Zuvich topped Uruguay with 14 points, followed by Melissa Paez and Meline Gimenez with 12 and 11 points. Guatemalan Daniela Tornoe had a match-high 16 points and teammate Kimberly Cardona landed 13 in the painful loss.

Ana Olaya scored 11 points for Colombia while Emelys Martinez and Manuela Ibarguen each contributed 10 points in the victory.
