Surprise quota fulfilled at Girls’ U18 World Champs Day 1

Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina, August 18, 2017 - FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship began this Friday in a fast pace as Belarus and crowd-favourites Argentina unveiled key wins over Brazil and Germany respectively, turning into the highlights of Day 1 action. Japan, Turkey, Russia, Poland, Serbia and Slovenia were also winners.


The first shock of the day came quite early as Belarus brought down South American champions Brazil with a convincing 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-14) score, to jump atop Pool B in Santa Fe. On the next game, the also European side of Russia firmly defeated Mexico 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-13) - this time according to the logic and gained some terrain in the group.

Meanwhile, morning action in Rosario began with Japan prevailing over Peru 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-18) unlocking the win after two tight sets. Then it was time for Turkey to shine, but at a 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-14) against Dominican Republic with a marvelous display of Ebrar Karakurt, best scorer of the day. Both winners control Pool D for now.

Hours later, the second half of Friday action was opened in Rosario with Poland surviving a few scares to rout Colombia 3-0 (25-23, 25-7, 27-25), while Serbia faced a similar situation - some very close sets and a wide margin after for a 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-6) win over a resilient Thailand.

Slovenia also joined the winners group after delivering a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24) to Korea, in what’s only their second appearance at this biennial competition. The final match boosted emotions through the roof in Santa Fe as the host girls from Argentina played a fantastic game to upset Germany 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 25-27, 25-14) and move up as well in Pool A.
