Sixteen teams on track as Girls’ U18 World Champs enters elimination phase

Argentina was one of three teams to claim a comeback win in Tuesday action in Santa Fe

Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina, August 22, 2017 - Pool play is over at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship Argentina 2017 and sixteen teams will feature in a very interesting agenda on Wednesday. Group leaders and hosts Argentina, Russia, Italy and Turkey are set to lead the charge as the crucial stages of the tournament approach.

It was an exhausting morning in Santa Fe as both Pool B matches went the full distance. Mexico was closer than ever to an unforgettable upset as they led 2-0 over USA and had four match points in the fourth set, but finally they were ruled out with a 3-2 (17-25, 24-26, 25-19, 30-28, 15-10) pulled off by USA, in a fabulous comeback that earned them the third place of the group. Russia also had to sweat to overcome Brazil 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-9) and climb to the top position.

Things were a lot quicker in Rosario, first thanks to a solid 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-21) of the Dominican Republic over China, a result that gave the winners the third slot in Pool D and sent the losers out of the contest. Then it was time for Turkey to shine, with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) over a gutsy Peru to be the best of the five teams in the pool, while Peru moved forward as fourth-ranked.

Pool C action was opened by a 3-1 (25-18, 12-25, 25-20, 25-22) win for Serbia against Colombia, in a duel between two qualified teams - the Europeans as third and the South Americans right behind them. Closing the first round in Rosario, Italy breezed past Thailand 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-17) and finished above all in the group, bypassing the Polish girls who had a day off and ended up second.

Meanwhile, more comebacks were to come in Santa Fe as Korea rebounded against Germany and won 3-2 (21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-13) to decide the final alignment in Pool A with one match to go. In the remaining game, crowd-favourites and first-placed Argentina met an already eliminated Cuba and the ending was another turnaround match with a score of 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 25-20, 27-25, 15-11) for the hosts. Argentina conserved a spotless 4-0 record.
