Russia clinch first triumph in straight sets over Mexico

 

Oxana Yakushina topped with 20 points against the Mexican team as Russia won in three sets.

Santa Fe, Argentina, August 18, 2017 - Russia had no problem in their first match of FIVB Girls’ U18 World Championship after a solid 3-0 win over Mexico by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-13 in Pool B.


Oxana Yakushina topped the match with 20 points for the Russian team, that overpassed Mexico in services with 7 collective aces against none by their North American rivals.

Polina Shemanova also finished with double digits, after scoring 12 for the Europeans. On the Mexican side, Uxue Guereca closed with 7. 


In the first set Mexico showed good attitude and some weapons like Guereca, Melanie Parra and Natalie Nava, who even fought hard in some blocking attempts. 

However, Russian game was too dominant. Good services were the key for Alexander Karikov’s team specially with players like Irina Soboleva and Veronika Rasputnaia, who aced twice each in a match that lasted 1 hour and 11 minutes.
