Girls’ U18 World Champs advance as favourites take shape

Great response from Rosario fans as they chose their favourites to cheer for in Saturday's matches

Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina, August 19, 2017 - Saturday was another sensational day at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship Argentina 2017, with packed stands at both venues. Rosario and Santa Fe fans witnessed wins from hosts Argentina, Russia, Turkey, Belarus, Japan, Germany, Italy and Poland.

The morning agenda in Santa Fe emphasized the position of both Pool B leaders. The first to grab their second win was Russia with a solid 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) over USA, while Belarus cruised past Mexico 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-14) to earn the same result as their European neighbours.

The same scenario was created in Pool D, held in Rosario. Turkey opened the day with a massive defeat of China 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-5) and moved closer to the next round, followed by a closer but still consistent 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-19) of Japan against the Dominican Republic, who are yet to celebrate a win on Argentinean soil.

Play resumed in the afternoon with the first five-setter of the tournament, where Germany made a comeback to end triumphant over Cuba 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10). Later on and also in Pool A, Argentina awarded more bliss to the home fans by downing Slovenia 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18) at a Day 1 winners' clash.

It was also time to enter the court for defending champions Italy and the girls did it in a fantastic fashion, as they routed Serbia 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-18) playing some very nice volleyball. The final match of the day was an interesting game where Poland prevailed 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-11) over Thailand, although the latter had most of the Rosario fans on their side.
