Germany beat Belarus in five sets and advance to quarterfinals

Santa Fe, Argentina, August 23, 2017 - Emma Cyris scored 31 points in Germany's victory against Belarus in five sets (20-25,25-22, 25-18,16-25,15-10)  in the eight finals round celebrated at National Technological University Stadium.


Along with Cyris, Lina Alsmeier contributed with 13 for Germany, that qualified to the quarterfinals. 

Belarusian attack was guided by Hannah Hryshkevich, who scored 22 points. She was followed by Vera Kastsiuchyk, who scored 13, and Alina Egorowa who tallied 12. Tatsiana Kholad also added points to Belarus’ balance with 10.

Both teams were equal in blocks (8 for Germany, 8 for Belarus) but services made a big difference for Germany that finished with 13 team aces against 6 by Belarus. Lina Alsmeier aced six times and Joseha Bock in four.

Belarus, a team that had become a big surprise in the pool phase, won the first set but struggled when the Germans tied in the second and took an advantage of more than six points in the third.

The team coached by Natallia Melianuk could not convert enough plays in the tiebreaker. On Friday, Germany will play against Turkey in Rosario, while Belarus will match Colombia in the classification round for places 9 to 16 in Santa Fe.
