Fantastic Italy once again atop of Girls’ U18 World Championship

 

Italy celebrate their second consecutive Girls' U18 World Championship title

Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina, August 27, 2017 - The FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship enjoyed the best possible closure as the hall in Rosario was once again packed with over 8’000 fans who witnessed Italy's victory against the Dominican Republic in a a delightful decisive match.


Italy prevailed 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-12, 25-20) with Terry Enweonwu, Alessia Populini and MVP Elena Pietrini in superb shape, while the Dominican Republic contributed to the show spurred on by their star Madeline Guillen to create a marvelous game, well celebrated by the fans. 

It was the second time back-to-back titles were recorded in the Girls’ U18 World Championships as Italy followed in the footsteps of China, who won consecutive editions in 2001 and 2003. This was also the second-ever gold medal for Italy after the one collected in 2015, and the sixth medal overall including one silver and three bronzes. 


While the stands were filling for the final showdown, Russia stepped onto the podium with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 25-15) triumph over Turkey in the match for third place. The result was also the end of a ten-year medal drought for Russia - their last was in Mexico in 2007 - also a bronze. 





In the lower part of the bracket in Santa Fe, Serbia finished on a high note after a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-21) over Colombia earning 13th place. Before that, Poland was 2-0 ahead in the match for the 15th place, but Slovenia woke up and reversed the game for a 3-2 (16-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-12) farewell win.
