Cuba and Colombia to battle for title at Pan Am Cup

 

Cubans celebrate their spectacular victory over Argentina on Saturday

Havana, Cuba, April 2, 2017 – Hosts Cuba will play Colombia for the gold medal at the U18 Girls' Pan American Cup following five-set semifinal victories over Argentina and the Dominican Republic, respectively, at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum of Havana on Saturday.

Cuba edged Argentina in a roller-coaster contest 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-11) while Colombia came all the way back from losing the first two sets to stun the Dominican Republic 3-2 (10-25, 22-25, 25-16, 28-26, 15-11).

Sunday’s action features three matches starting with the contest between Mexico and Chile for the fifth position followed by the bronze and gold medal battles.

Ailama Cese (12) had 24 points in the victory of Cuba over Argentina on Saturday night  

Elizabeth Vicet and Ailama Cesé registered 26 and 24 points, respectively, as solid cornerstones of the Cuban attack while Ivy Vila and Yamisleidys Viltres contributed 12 and 11 in the victory. Argentina’s top scorers were Sofia Meinardi (17) and Martina Delucchi (16).

Manuela Ibarguen led the Colombian sensational comeback with 22 points, followed by Ana Olaya and Valerin Carabalí with 16 and 12, respectively, in the victory.

Dominican Madeline Guillen topped all the players in the match with 28 points while teammates Yaneirys Rodriguez and Yanlis Feliz added 14 and 12, respectively, in the losing effort.

Earlier on Saturday, Uruguay claimed a seesaw 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-12) victory over Guatemala for the ninth position and Puerto Rico swept Costa Rica 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-21) in the contest for the seventh place.

Colombia from South America plus Cuba and Mexico from NORCECA have already claimed their tickets from the Pan Am Cup to the 2017 FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship to be held 18-27 August in Argentina.
