Chile show energy in victory over Puerto Rico at U18 Pan Am Cup

 

Chileans celebrate after their victory over Puerto Rico in 2 hours and 20 minutes in Havana

Havana, Cuba, March 29, 2017 – Chile scored a come-from-behind victory over Puerto Rico in five sets 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 18-16) to open the actions in Pool A at the U18 Girls’ Pan American Cup in Havana, Cuba on Tuesday, a competition which offers three tickets to the FIVB Volleyball U18 Girls’ World Championship in Argentina from August 18 to 27.

Puerto Rico committed 47 to 35 by the South American side to make the difference in the match that lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes. The Puerto Rican held a 12-7 advantage in blocks but the Chileans served better for a 7-4 margin in aces.

Puerto Rican Sofia Victoria led all the scorers of Day One 

Sofia Victoria had 33 points in a losing effort for Puerto Rico as the top scorer of the match. Chile’s Beatriz Novoa and Maike Bertens finished with 26 and 17 points in the victory.

The other three matches of Day One of the event all finished in straight sets.

In Pool C, Dominican Republic swept Uruguay 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-14) and Mexico beat Guatemala 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-12). In Pool B, Cuba defeated Costa Rica 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-13).

Madeline Guillen and Yaneirys Rodriguez finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively, in the Dominican win over Uruguay. The Dominicans led 8-2 in blocks and 7-1 in direct points from the service line.

Uxue Guereca and Abril Zamampa had 13 and 9 points, respectively, in the cruising victory of Mexico over neighbors Guatemala.

Ailama Cese led three Cubans with double figures in the scores with 15 points in the overwhelming victory over Costa Rica. Elizabeth Vicet and Evilania Martinez each contributed 11 points in the victory.

Cuba blanked Costa Rica 10-0 in both blocking and aces category.
