Germany, Dominican Republic and USA lead upsets at Girls’ U18

Germany lost the first set against Belarus but then recovered to finally win 3-2 and move to quarterfinals

Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina, August 23, 2017 - Only eight teams now remain in contention for the gold medal at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship Argentina 2017, with Germany, USA and the Dominican Republic winning despite their lower seeding and heading a list that also includes hosts Argentina, Russia, Japan, Turkey and Italy.

The first team to book a quarterfinals ticket was Russia, after a 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 25-18) win over a buoyant Korea side, who fought hard against one of the still undefeated teams of the tournament. Later on, the lower-ranked Germany grabbed a win as they sent off second-placed Belarus 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 15-10).

Rosario opened its bracket with a breathtaking game in which Japan celebrated after a rollercoaster win against Serbia 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 26-28, 19-25, 17-15). The Serbian girls saved seven match balls in the third set and had one of their own in the tie-breaker, but weren’t able to complete the comeback. On the other hand, Turkey barely suffered in their 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) defeat of Colombia.

In a tricky day for some of the favourites, Italy was flawless to prevail over Peru 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-13), clearly strengthening after a tight first set. The last match of the day in Rosario was an intense encounter in which the Dominican Republic brought down Poland 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 16-14).

Also in Santa Fe, where the upset by Germany was hosted, USA defeated Slovenia with a steady 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) in the first afternoon game. Next, Argentina’s dream run increased thanks to a historical win over neighbours Brazil 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-18), a result that could come as a surprise considering world rankings, but the home team is having a fabulous tournament with a current 5-0 on win-losses.

There were also matches from the round robin action to decide 17th to 20th placements, with two continental clashes - Thailand defeated China 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) and Mexico took a bit longer to beat Cuba 3-1 (25-15, 16-25, 25-17, 25-16). All the remaining games of this pool will be played in Rosario.
